Bruce Borkovich is currently the police chief at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI, where he has served since 2013. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in education, and a Master of Science degree from Ferris State University in criminal justice administration. Bruce is also an adjunct professor in the Criminal Justice program at Ferris State.

From 2006 until 2013, he was a member of the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET), which is a Michigan State Police multi-jurisdictional drug task force in Mid-Michigan. During this time he was a case detective and later helped to supervise the team and major drug investigations. Due to his training and experience, he has been recognized as an expert witness in five court jurisdictions in the street level sale and distribution of narcotics. As a member of the BAYANET Team, he participated in the planning and execution of over 300 search warrants.

 

From 1986 until his retirement from the State of Michigan in 2006, Bruce was a DNR Michigan Conservation Officer, and later a Detective with the DNR. During this time, Bruce taught investigations, search warrants, OUIL enforcement, and man-tracking in the DNR Conservation Officer academy, and also taught at the Michigan State Police academy. He was also an adjunct professor at Central Michigan University, teaching conservation law enforcement. In 1999, Bruce was promoted to Detective with the DNR, where he conducted numerous covert and overt investigations into the illegal sale and trade of protected wildlife. In 2003, he was awarded the coveted Shikar-Safari Michigan Conservation Officer of the year award. This award was also earned by his brother Mike and brother John, both of whom retired as Michigan Conservation Officers.

Bruce began his professional career as a teacher and a coach in the Evart public school system. In his fourth and last year of teaching before becoming a Conservation Officer in 1986, Bruce coached the varsity boy’s basketball team, the 7th grade girl’s basketball team, and the JV boy’s baseball team.

Bruce was born in Flint, MI and is the son of Walter and Allison Borkovich. Bruce has two sisters, Marla and Kristen, and two brothers, Mike and John. Bruce was married to the love of his life Vickie in 1983, and he has a daughter, Arielle, and a granddaughter.

​

Bruce enjoys hunting, trapping, fishing, being with his family and friends, making rustic furniture, and working on his farm in Mecosta County.
